About Saving Ourselves Symposium (SOS)
The Saving Ourselves Symposium (SOS), hosted by The Red Door Foundation, addresses the health and wellness of the Black LGBTQ community in the South, focusing on HIV and other health disparities.
(SOS), is an annual conference designed to provide cutting edge research, promising practices, and HIV/AIDS behavior change techniques in efforts to educate, encourage, and empower the Black LGBTQ community. Started in 2013, SOS is a one-of-a-kind conference that has provided first-hand information to service providers and service users working within and throughout the Black LGBTQ community.
Continuing Education Credit
The Red Door Foundation, Inc. is proud to announce a collaborative partnership with the Southeast AIDS Education and Training Center to provide continuing education (CE) credits to social workers, nurse practitioners, and certified counselors at #SOS2018 in Birmingham, AL. This year, we will be providing free CEs for the following groups:
Alabama Board of Social Work Examiners provider number 0134
National Board for Certified Counselors provider number 6882
Alabama Board of Nursing provider status pending
Alabama state licensed nurses can use ABSWE hours as ethics hours.
If you plan to participate in the conference this year and obtain CE credits, you must register with TRDF and pay the conference registration fee. Next, you are to visit the following SE AETC websites to complete the CE registration process for the CE. First, if you do not have a current SE AETC profile, you must log in to: https://www.seaetc.com/profile-registration/, and create a profile. After completing the profile, you will be asked to login and register for the Saving Ourselves Symposium 2018 at the following link: https://www.seaetc.com/event/?ER_ID=8046. If you already have a profile with SE AETC, you can skip step 1 and just login and register for the event.

Room rates are quoted exclusive of state/local taxes and fees, currently 11% and $.75 per occupied room, per day.
The 2018 Saving Ourselves Symposium is slated for June 6 - 10, 2018 in Birmingham, Alabama at the Birmingham Sheraton Hotel . This meeting is a collaboration between community-based organizations (CBOs), health departments (HDs), national organizations and The Red Door Foundation, Inc.. Registration is now open.
Create a safe space to openly and candidly discuss health and wellness concerns within the Black LGBTQ community
Provide updated and time-sensitive information regarding the HIV/AIDS epidemic within the Black LGBTQ community
Provide collaborative opportunities for service providers and service users to strategically identify steps to decrease HIV/AIDS outcomes among Black LGBTQ individuals living in the South
Improve the linkage and retention-in-care treatment outcomes for Black LGBTQ individuals living with HIV in the South
Recognize that HIV is a social justice issue that involve issues such as mass incarnation, poverty, racism and housing- just to name a few.

Scholarships will prioritize those living with HIV and those that identify as Black LGBTQ. Geographic diversity will be important, with a special focus on the South and regions where HIV disproportionately impacts people of color.
If awarded, Scholarship recipients will be required to register for confirmation with payment. The conference will then purchase coach class tickets via air, train or bus. Scholarship recipients must live at least 50 miles outside of the Birmingham city boundaries in order to be eligible for a travel scholarship.
